Adrienne Doig: Splendid - Art Collector

Adrienne Doig, Splendid (Grandmother’s Flower Garden), 2013. Patchwork, applique and embroidery on canvas, 78.5 x 98.5cm. Courtesy: the artist and Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney

In her playful yet pointed images, Adrienne Doig uses unfinished patchwork projects to create a new, placard-waving series of self portraits that explore conscious notions of identity and personal image. Combining her stylised poses and gestures with decorative fabrics from the 1930s and 40s, Doig uses the self-portraits in Splendid to illuminate the inherent vanity and affectation of self portraiture. While the vibrant colours, patterning and patchwork design give the works a vivid pop style that belies the intricate authenticity of the detail Doig recreates, the facetious use of placards allows Doig to engage directly with the viewer, repeating comments others have previously made about her work.
