A.J. Taylor: The Ground Beneath - Art Collector

A.J. Taylor, Spectacle Island (Pink), 2017, oil on board, 73 x 69 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Martin Browne Contemporary

Martin Browne Contemporary is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by A.J. Taylor.

Taylor’s landscapes depict the Australian environment in almost photographic detail. However on closer examination, the rocky cliffs and serene waters fracture into abstract shapes and marks, while the surrounding vegetation disintegrates into flat abstract mark-making and areas of saturated colour. In the time-consuming and painstaking technique Taylor has developed, layer upon layer of paint has been applied and then rubbed back, creating an almost polished surface whilst building an illusion of depth and light into the two dimensional field.

A.J. Taylor has been a finalist in the Wynne Prize, Fleurieu Art Prize, John Glover Art Prize and the Hawkesbury Art Prize. His work is represented in public and corporate collections, including Artbank, BHP Billiton, Macquarie Bank, The Museum of Brisbane and The Parliament House Art Collection.
