Akay Koo’oila is a far-north Queensland artist born in 1923. Koo’oila’s painting has evolved into explosions of colour that denote bush fruits. Her layering of what appear to be disparate colour combinations create compositions that celebrate the landscape. Minnie Lumai, now in her early 70s, grew up on Newry Station in the East Kimberley. Painting since the mid 1990s, she immediately gained acclaim for her elegant paintings and extraordinary array of colours blended from natural ochres. Her signature works are based on the sugarbag dreaming and are layered and deceptively complex stories.
