The annual $50,000 Kilgour Prize for figurative and portrait painting has been awarded to Alan Jones for his work Robert Forrester #2. The work explores Australia’s colonial history and the journey of the First Fleet.

On winning the award, Jones told the Newcastle Herald: “something like this … It’s like someone saying to you ‘Mate you are doing alright, you are going in the right direction, just keep going’… It’s hard to get that sort of feedback from other people, it’s a lovely surprise.”

Jones’ portrait will be exhibited from 8 November to 25 January 2014 at Newcastle Art Gallery.

Alan Jones will have a solo exhibition at his representing gallery Olsen Irwin in Sydney from 26 August to 13 September 2015.
