Alexander McKenzie: Katsura - Art Collector

Alexander McKenzie, The Alchemist, 2016, oil on linen, 122 x 167 cm.

In Alexander McKenzies highly anticipated new exhibition “Katsura”, McKenzie continues his exploration of implied narrative and complex symbolism within the beauty of a Japanese inspired landscape.

The title ‘Katsura” while directly referencing the town outside Kyoto, becomes a metaphor for the allegorical paintings that the artist imbues with heavily loaded and symbolic imagery to describe his unique interpretation of Prince Toshihito’s Imperial Villa Gardens. The paintings are vast, layered and complex. McKenzie treats the landscape in his signature style but with new colour, rich dark tones, highly rendered detail and a shimmering surface.
