All Possible Worlds proves an auction not-to-be-missed - Art Collector

Auckland’s ART+OBJECT will auction a landmark collection of Australian, New Zealand and International Contemporary Art at the end of this month.

‘All Possible Worlds - The Peter James Smith Collection’ reads as a near mini survey of Australasian contemporary art over the last 25 years.

Smith is a fascinating artist and academic who has recently retired from an over 20-year career at RMIT University, where he held numerous senior positions culminating in his unique role as Professor of Mathematics and Art from 2003 to 2010.

For more than 40 years, he has staged more than 70 solo shows as a practicing artist at galleries in New Zealand and Australia. In the same period, he published five books and more than 40 peer-reviewed articles on mathematics and statistics.

Australian artists in Smith’s collection include Shaun Gladwell, Tracey Moffatt, Ricky Swallow, Louise Weaver, David Noonan, Adam Cullen, Bill Henson and Polixeni Papapetrou.

New Zealand artists include Colin McCahon, Michael Parekowhai, Francis Upritchard, Simon Denny, Peter Robinson, Richard Lewer, Bill Culbert, Dane Mitchell, Heather Straka and Fiona Pardington.

International artists include Richard Prince, Tony Ousler, Damien Hirst, Martin Creed, Rosemary Trockel, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys and Jake and Dinos Chapman.
