30 October 2012 | Allan Myers has been appointed chair of the council of the National Gallery of Australia.

The announcement was made by arts minister Simon Crean earlier this month, who stated that Myers will bring leadership, legal and philanthropic expertise to the council.

Myers is also chair of the advisory board at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and the governor of the Ian Potter Foundation, and is an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his support and sponsorship of a range of educational, Indigenous and arts organisations.

Crean’s speech also paid tribute to Myer’s predecessor Tim Fairfax and to the role of the National Gallery of Australia as a cultural institution.
