Aly Aitken’s upcoming exhibition ‘The Unbearable Weight of Things That Are Lost’ presents an army of bodily figures, grey silhouettes and statured potato heads wheeled noiselessly into dusty corners and placed against empty walls. The series attempts to reflect the artist’s bewilderment and alludes to her irrational fear of mindlessness.

In a state of isolation, Aitken creates work that is experimental, tentative and playful. Aitken’s upcoming exhibition employs a surrealist sense of humour. The abstract figures, draped in fabric, buttons and props, share both the satirical and disturbing qualities of traditional surrealism. The artists emotionally charged, harrowing exhibition ultimately fuses themes of anonymity, fantasy, powerlessness and life.
