Firstdraft’s 2014 Print Edition is artist Anna Kirstensen’s EIIIAOPH.
Launched in 2011, Firstdraft’s Print Edition is a fundraising initiative that contributes to the artist run space’s ability to provide rent-free shows to featured artists.
A photographic detail of a stucco wall taken by Kristensen in Terlingua, Texas forms the basis of the edition print. The image is one of numerous photos of walls taken by the artist while on residency in the USA in 2013, which have been turned into various printed and painted reproductions.
Walls have come to provide fruitful subject matter, for the artist, who explores surface tension and optical illusion in image making. EIIIAOPH uses the technique of letterpress printing to deboss the print, a technique that lends three dimensionality to the photographic image’s appearance. Through this technique the marks in the image appear to hover above the surface of the wall, while in reality they sink into the paper’s depth, creating playful misalignment.
Kristensen is represented by Sydney’s Gallery 9 and Melbourne’s Station Gallery.
The 2014 Print Edition will launch 6pm Wednesday 22 October 2014. Click here for more information.
