Annette Bezor: At first sight... - Art Collector

Annette Bezor, Quiet Violent. Acrylic and oil on canvas, 140 x 140 cm.

One of Australia’s most highly respected painters, Annette Bezor’s studies of female subjectivity take inspiration from mediums as diverse as classic portraiture, contemporary media representations and erotica. Her spectrum of sources plays a central role in refiguring classical perceptions of identity and the feminine gaze, thereby reversing the sexualised power relations between subject and viewer. The intricate layers of paint carefully applied to the surface of her canvasses extend the metaphor of identity that implicitly runs through her art and gestures towards the multiplicity of meanings embedded within the construction of each work.
