Antonia Sellbach’s large modular paintings and related timber constructions draw on her interest in visual abstraction and its relationship to language. Sellbach describes her processes as ‘making moves’, approached along similar lines as taking part in a conversation or game, when one exchange informs the next. Each mark put down on canvas, or the placement of painted wooden sticks in the gallery, responds to a preceding gesture which in turn is governed by the artist’s own rules of play.
