Indigenous Art Code

The Indigenous Art Code Symbol it means galleries committing to ethical trade with Indigenous Artists.

Wherever you see the Indigenous Art Code symbol you’ll know the art dealer and the gallery have committed to ethical trading.

The Indigenous Art Code has been created to protect the rights of Indigenous artists and those people who support their talent and invest in their creativity.

What it means for you is that your money is supporting a fair go for Indigenous artists
who are keeping the traditions of the world’s oldest living culture alive.

Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia

The Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia (AACHWA) is a peak advocacy and resource agency servicing seven art centres across 32 communities. In total, they represent 450 artists located in the Great Southern, Mid West, Goldfields and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.

AACHWA’s mission is to support Aboriginal art in Western Australia by offering professional development opportunities and providing services and resources that enable the sustainability and growth of art in remote communities. It is part of the national network of peak bodies that support and voice the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

AACHWA was established in 2009 and encompasses seven member art centres. These include Spinifex Arts Project in Tjuntjarra Community, Martumili Artists in Newman, Tjukurba Gallery in Wiluna, Roebourne Art Centre in Roebourne, Yamaji Art in Geraldton, Wirnda Barna Artists in Mt. Magnet and Mungart boodja Art Centre in Katanning.

Currently, AACHWA is a project of Country Arts Western Australia, hoping to become an independent Aboriginal corporation in the next two years. AACHWA is guided by an Aboriginal advisory group composed of representatives from each of the member art centres.

Ananguku Arts and Culture Aboriginal Corporation

Ananguku Arts and Culture Aboriginal Corporation otherwise known as Ku Arts is an Aboriginal owned arts support organisation for Indigenous artists in South Australia. The organisation is governed by a thirteen person board and includes representatives from the seven art centres on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.

Ananguku Arts started in 1998 at Ernabella by women. At this time, there were only three art centres on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.

Today, the organisation delivers professional development workshops, advocacy for Indigenous artists, Indigenous governance support, recruitment, marketing and human resources support. The organisation also assists the implementation of the Indigenous Art Code.

As a supporter member of the Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct we are committed to the principles of ethical trade in Indigenous visual art as set out in the code.
