Art Gallery of NSW confirms major funding boost - Art Collector

19 June 2013 | The Art Gallery of New South Wales has welcomed a decision from the state government to provide $10.8 million in funding over the next two years.

This significant commitment begins in 2014 and will enable the gallery to advance with its master plan titled
Sydney Modern, which proposes a major expansion to double the size of the building and link it with a new iconic building that takes advantage of its proximity to Sydney Harbour.

The funding will include feasibility and engineering studies leading to an international competition for the selection of an architect to design the new building. Minister for the Arts, George Souris stated that the state government "is delighted to commit the $10.8 million which will enable the gallery to continue with its plans to upgrade this leading New South Wales cultural institution in Sydney. It is a necessary step in the Gallery’s ability to fulfil its role as the State’s principal art museum and to make its contribution to the revitalisation of the State’s economy."

The gallery aims to complete the project by 2021 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of its founding.
