28 September 2010 | Over the coming long weekend, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is staging three full days of performances, talks by curators, artists and celebrities, music, films and workshops.

The special open weekend is being held to celebrate Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander art and culture.

In association with art+soul, a new exhibition at the AGNSW and forthcoming ABC TV documentary, over 25 artists from across Australia, many of whom are featured in the series and exhibition, will be participating in the open weekend to share their stories.

Hetti Perkins and Edmund Capon will also team up to introduce visitors to the art + soul exhibition, leading talks at 10.30am on both the Saturday and Sunday.

Melbourne’s Reko Rennie will host a 4-hour stencil workshop, Yvonne Koolmatrie will lead a weaving demonstration and artist talks by Judy Watson, Richard Bell, Destiny Deacon, Ricky Maynard and HJ Wedge will also be held throughout the weekend.

A further highlight will be the ceremonial performance of the Gurrir Gurrir, from the Warmun (Turkey Creek) community in the Kimberley. The performance will be staged every morning of the open weekend at 11.30am.
