ArtGeo Cultural Complex is a multi- arts centre for the visual and performing arts. Owned and managed by the City of Busselton, the heritage- listed site includes an art gallery, artists’ studios, an acting school, café and 19th century courthouse.
There is a steady stream of new exhibitions, many of which showcase the South West region’s artists and artisans. Artgeo Gallery also exhibits emerging artists, along with national touring exhibitions.
Housed in a former bank, ArtGeo Gallery’s 1930s façade conceals a contemporary ‘white cube’ space that is used to host temporary exhibitions sourced both regionally and Australia-wide.
The City of Busselton art collection began in the 1960s with a bequest of 30 Australian paintings and drawings from philanthropist Sir Claude Hotchin. The collection now holds over 100 works, including wood block prints by Japanese master print-maker Hiroshi Tomihari.
The Artgeo Gallery is in a 1931 heritage-listed building in the inter-war free classical style. It was originally the Agriculture Bank of Western Australia and was later used by the state government’s Agriculture Department. The City of Busselton acquired the building in 2006 and, after a refurbishment, the Artgeo Gallery opened its doors to the public in September 2008.
The City of Busselton Art Award is open to all Western Australian artists working in any two-dimensional or three-dimensional media and subject. Launched
in 2008, this annual art award showcases ArtGeo Gallery to a wider audience, contributing to the growth of its contemporary art collection.
First Prize is a $10,000 acquisitive prize, plus a five-week solo exhibition in the ArtGeo Gallery. Second prize, the Emerging Artist Award (non-acquisitive), totals $2,500. Third prize, known as the People’s Choice, is $500.
