Mental As, which coincides with Mental Health Week running from 5 to 12 October 2014, aims to encourage discussions about mental health as well as support and donations, The overall goal is to raise more than $1 million for mental health research in Australia.

Head of ABC arts Katrina Sedgwick says “the arts have always played a vital part in illuminating issues around mental health – both through representation and through the cathartic process of making or engaging with art.

“Artists are unique in their ability to creatively challenge norms, to ask hard questions and to illustrate and explore truths our mainstream society would rather ignore…”

100% of the funds raised from the art auction will be put towards mental health research.

The auction goes live at 9pm this Thursday October 2, with the paintings on display now in the ABC Ultimo foyer until October 10.
