Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is a modern, highly celebrated regional art gallery which generates state-of-the-art exhibitions of contemporary art.

Built in 1989, it was the first purpose built regional gallery in NSW. It is a well-equipped and professionally staffed facility owned and operated by Bathurst Regional Council.

The gallery is a creator of quality in-house and touring exhibitions, and operates the nationally renowned Hill End Artists in Residence Program.
BRAG averages 30,000 visitors a year, well above the national average for a regional gallery. The gallery enjoys widespread community support and continues to develop a reputation as one of the leading regional galleries in New South Wales.

The collection

From 1955 the collection has grown to include more than 2,000 works in a wide variety of media and is valued at over $8.4 million. The collection features paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photographs and ceramics by 400 Australian artists, including significant works by artists such as Jean Bellette, Donald Friend, James Gleeson, John Olsen, Lloyd Rees, Grace Cossington Smith and Fred Williams.

The main focus of the collection is post 1950s Australian Art; the Lloyd Rees collection; artists of Hill End 1945 to present; and Australian studio ceramics and small sculptures.

Exhibition highlights

BRAG’s exhibition program features incoming touring exhibitions, specially curated exhibitions, community exhibitions, local artist projects, exhibitions curated from the permanent collection and the work of Hill End artists.

The design of the gallery allows for the programming of three to four exhibitions at a time, with an exhibition changeover every six weeks. With an average of 25 exhibitions per year, there is always plenty of new material for visitors.

The Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Society, affectionately known as BRAGS, aims to foster, promote and encourage membership of the gallery and to further the development of the arts in Bathurst. The society provides valuable assistance in the acquisition of new works for the collection.

Members receive a discount at the gallery shop, invitations to all BRAG events and discounts for workshops. New members are always welcome.
