Masculine Feminine is an exhibition of new work by artist Belle Bassin, whose breadth of ideas is articulated in a variety of mediums. The transference of energy between people, particularly between genders, is played out in the colour arrangement and symmetrical imagery of Bassin’s large-scale painted linen panels. Related to this transference is the idea of the auric field, which is recreated as a cumbersome, umbrella structure that wanders through crowded Parisian streets and subways in the video work It’s easier to look at your skin. Throughout the artist’s work a dream object lingers, relating to the surrealist idea of taking an object from a dream into waking life in an attempt to bind the two realities. Masculine Feminine is a sustained and multifaceted attempt to join the two through works that intersect the space and offer bridges between dreams and waking life.
