Established in 1887, Bendigo Art Gallery is one of the oldest and largest regional galleries in Australia. The gallery’s collection is extensive, with an emphasis on 19th century European art and Australian art from the 1800s onwards, alongside a strong collection of contemporary Australian art. The collection is complimented by dynamic temporary exhibitions from national and international artists. There is also a diverse range of public programs and events - guest speaker programs, floor talks, artist talks, guided tours, workshops, talks by arts professionals, family and children’s programs, education programs, film screenings and more.

The collection

Bendigo Art Gallery has some remarkable paintings, sculptures and decorative arts reflecting European salon trends of the mid to late 19th century. The gallery also hold many works by 19th century Australian artists, including those who documented the history of Bendigo. Today the gallery is focused on building a strong collection of contemporary Australian art.

Art awards

The gallery offers three major prizes. The Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize is held every second year and is an acquisitive award worth $50,000. The Paul Guest Prize is also held every second year and is a non-acquisitive award worth $12,000. Recently, the Contemporary Australian Silver and Metalwork Award has been added to the program - it offers various prizes for both professional and student entrants.
