Beyond Sacred: Australian Aboriginal Art - Art Collector
|18 July 2011 | Colin and Elizabeth Laverty’s extensive Aboriginal art collection, collected over the past 23 years, is the focus Beyond Sacred: Australian Aboriginal Art, The Collection of Colin and Elizabeth Laverty, Edition II. |
This second edition includes 77 new works and over 300 carvings, prints and paintings from more than 38 remote communities and outstations. Artists featured include Rover Thomas, Emily Kngwarreye, John Mawurndjul as well as emerging artists Christine Yukenbarri, Daniel Walbidi and Alma Webou Kalaju.
"We hope this book will continue to increase appreciation of Australian Indigenous art. Some of the most recent art more than holds its own with other contemporary art made anywhere in the world," Colin and Elizabeth Lavery explain in the jointly written preface to the second edition.
"We think the best of it is to be regarded as culturally important, as well as being great contemporary art made by Aboriginal artists, rather than simply as Aboriginal art"
The release of the second edition coincides with the exhibition of the Laverty’s collection Laverty 2, currently on display at the Newcastle Regional Gallery until 14 August 2011.
