Earlier this April, the director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney, Mami Kataoka, announced the first 21 artists selected for exhibition at next year’s event.

The list includes international ‘superstars’ like Ai Weiwei, as well as Australian artists Brook Andrew, Koji Ryui, Yasmin Smith and George Tjungurrayi. A total of 70 artists are expected to exhibit.

The curatorial approach, at least for now, appears to be broad. “Rather than focusing on a specific concept or theme, the exhibition will suggest multi-layered perspectives of the world and its histories simultaneously,” said Kataoka.

However, more details regarding the exhibition title and themes will be announced in July 2017.

To celebrate the Biennale of Sydney’s 45th anniversary next year, the event will also feature an exhibition of artworks from its archives.

The 21st Biennale of Sydney will preview from 13 to 15 March 2018 and will be open to the public at multiple locations around Sydney from Friday 16 March to Monday 11 June 2018.
