Biennale of Sydney announces 2012 directors - Art Collector

11 October 2010 | Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster have been appointed joint artistic directors for the next Biennale of Sydney, which will be staged in 2012. It is the first time a curatorial duo has been appointed, but it won’t be the first time the two have worked together.

They have previously collaborated on projects including the reinstallation of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s collection and the exhibition
Draw & Tell at New York’s Drawing Centre.

De Zegher is currently a guest curator in the Museum of Modern Art’s drawing department, and McMaster is a curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Perhaps hinting at what may be to come for biennale visitors, de Zegher says she believes Australia is on the verge of taking centre stage in outlining a new world view for the future. “With large shifts happening on a global scale, from West to East and North to South, I think Sydney and its biennale are best positioned to epitomise the transition of divisive modernist structures and systems into the fluent dynamics of a 21st century thinking,” she notes.

The 18th Biennale of Sydney will be staged from 27 June to 16 September 2012.
