Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery - Art Collector

Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery exterior

The Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery is a large multi-purpose visual arts facility showcasing exhibitions drawn from local, state, national and international artists. The gallery houses three very distinctive exhibition spaces including The Vault, a contemporary installation art space. The gallery’s gift shop stocks only artworks handmade by artisans from within the Bundaberg Regional Council region. The first floor of the gallery features an access studio used as a workshop and community events space, as well as an artist in residence apartment for use by local and visiting artists.

The gallery has a unique history with the building starting life as Customs House in 1902. From 1921 onwards the building was occupied by the Commonwealth Bank, then in 1978 it was purchased by the then Bundaberg City Council and utilised as the library. The Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery (then known as the Bundaberg Art Centre) opened in 1995.

The collection

The Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery’s permanent collection comprises four sub-collections, amounting to over 400 works across all art forms. In 2008 the gallery developed an overall collection focus on landscapes.

In selecting works for the collection, the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery seeks to enrich an understanding of the history of the Bundaberg region, in an effort to conserve its heritage for future generations.
