CJ Taylor: even, still - Art Collector

CJ Taylor, Still life with possum, mussels and New Holland Honeyeater, 2011. Pigment print mounted to acrylic glass, 57 x 75cm, edition of 5. Courtesy: the artist and Helen Gory Galarie, Melbourne

Taylor’s compelling new series of photographs explores notions of identity, reality and place. Strangely familiar but peppered with small oddities and disruptions, Taylor’s images hover between the known and unknown, the real and unreal. He employs the disquieting artifice of still life painting to explore the truth of the photographic image.

The enigmatic images bring together the harsh natural beauty of the bushland and flora surrounding his South Australian home and bare, mass-produced taxidermy moulds to reflect on notions of beauty and the grotesque and the tenuousness of the natural world.

Taylor won the inaugural Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize earlier this year, the Atkins Award in 2011 and has been curated into numerous institutional exhibitions including Hatched at PICA.
