Established in 1995, Cairns Regional Gallery is the region's premier destination for art. Its exhibitions featuring historical and contemporary art by leading regional, national and international artists. The gallery presents a range of creative learning programs for audiences of diverse ages and backgrounds including art classes, talks and events.

The collection

Cairns Regional Gallery houses a permanent collection that focuses on the unique cultural heritage of Far North Queensland. The gallery primarily collects works by artists from this region, as well as by artists influenced or inspired by it. The collection includes both conventional and experimental media.

The collection has a number of significant works, including pieces by Brett Whiteley, Russell Drysdale, Margaret Olley, Donald Friend and Ian Fairweather. Ray Crooke, one of the most acclaimed and recognised artists of Far North Queensland and a former Archibald prize 1969 winner, has also made valuable contributions to Cairns Regional Gallery’s collection. The gallery’s portfolio of prints includes works by Yvonne Boag, Guy Warren, Theo Tremblay and Gary Shead.

The collection also has a significant component of works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Ranging from traditional to contemporary, the artworks of the Indigenous peoples of the Far North provide an important insight into cultures unique to the region. Torres Strait Islander artists represented in the collection include Edrick Tabuai, Ken Thaiday Snr and Alick Tipoti. Aboriginal artists of Cape York represented in the collection include Thancoupie, Rosella Namok, Arone Meeks and members of the Lockhart River Art Gang.
