Catherine Clayton-Smith: Root Channel - Art Collector

Catherine Clayton-Smith, ‘Sado-Motivator’, 2018. Acrylic on canvas, 140 x 175cm. Courtesy: the artist and Bartley + Company Art, Wellington.

A kind of knowingness, a disrupted beauty and a sense of something strangely, but not quite definably, familiar pervades the five medium to large paintings presented in this exhibition. A confident assertion of painting’s power, these constructed landscapes speak to life, to colour and the world we live in as suggestions, fragments and hints of things seen, experienced, felt.

This will be Catherine Clayton-Smith’s first solo exhibition in New Zealand. Raised in Christchurch, Catherine completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the National Art School in Sydney in 2014. Clayton-Smith is a finalist in the 2018 Sir John Sulman Prize currently exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She has previously won the National Art School’s Parkers Sydney Fine Art Painting Award, the Studio W Exhibition Prize, the Blank Canvas Award for Painting and the John Olsen Prize for Figure Drawing.
