Chen Ping is an outstanding Tasmanian artist with a career of exhibitions spaning more than 20 years and numerous countries, including again, at the Venice Biennale this year His work has developed a visual language bringing together the cultural heritages of Western and Eastern history and mythologies where he engages with stories of the human condition and pivotal events of a village, nation or culture. The artist, as story teller, engages with a visual interpretations and provides insight and analysis through contemporary eyes.

The Picnic approaches the pivotal work of Eduard Manet The Luncheon on the Grass, which challenged the conventions of the time.

Similarly, Ping's work takes reference of this iconic painting, the female figure in the forest, in context of picnic, trees and playful engagement with birds. In some works, the colourful ribbon across faces of figures is an abstract devise used to challenge the classicism of the setting. It marks a point of tension and announces a transition and change between ways of seeing the work through literal depiction and the abstract implication.
