Chris Langlois: Of Land + Sea - Art Collector

The show is made up of two distinctly disparate bodies of work, both morphed from utterly different processes. It is the first time in my 27 year career that I have done so.

Trees have always held an attraction to me and over the past two years I've made several trips to the Flinders Ranges specifically to locate and photograph the majestic River Red Gums that are in abundance there. Whereas the label 'gumtree painter' has long been a derogatory term I couldn't deny my desire to revel in their sheer beauty.

In an ode to those who also shared this passion, Hans Heysen, Albert Namatjira and Penleigh Boyd to name but a few, I chose to embrace a sense of historical reference and have painted them in black and white, monochromatic or even sepia toned- as if they are from the past - an entirely new sensibility for me. They are sculptural, literal and painterly, descriptive images.

Conversely it was my intention to present the second body of work in photographic form, as far removed as possible from the monochromatic trees. These paintings are colourful, ambiguous, abstract, ephemeral works capturing the change of light on the ocean between night and day, mimicking the works of Mark Rothko in a photographic medium. They succeeded absolutely as I intended, however the temptation to paint them overcame me.
