Clive Stephen: Sculptor - Art Collector

Melbourne born artist Clive Stephen (1889 - 1957) is considered one of the pioneers in Australia’s modernist art movement. Stephen’s stone carvings of figures and animals are typified by their intimate stylized forms and simplified beauty. Stephen would carve according to the modernist mantra of ‘truth to materials’ so that the qualities of wood and stone would dictate a sculpture’s final form and shape. There are over 30 works in the exhibition Clive Stephen including major sculptural works from both private and public collections augmented by works on paper.
