Cornelia Tipuamantumirri: New paintings - Art Collector

Cornelia Tipuamantumirri, Winga (Tidal Movement/Waves), 2013. Ochre on linen, 120 x 40cm. Courtesy: the artist, Munupi Arts, Nothern Territory and Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne

This exhibition showcases new paintings in ochre by senior Tiwi artist Cornelia Tipuamantumirri. In this unique and sophisticated body of work, Tipuamantumirri depicts traditional Jilamara, or designs, as well as the coastline and tidal movements that surrounds her country of Pirlangimipi on Melville Island in the Northern Territory. The patterns in her luminous paintings emulate the waves breaking on the coastline, as they capture sunlight glistening on the water’s surface.

In her relatively short artistic career, Tipuamantumirri has had her work collected by important institutions and collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and the Aboriginal Art Museum in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
