David Hawley: Movement - Art Collector

David Hawley, Untitled Movement No 1, 2018. Mixed media on canvas 145 x 160cm. Courtesy of the artist and Colville Gallery, TAS.

David Hawley is an articulate and controlled painter. Over a considerable period he has carefully approached finite aspects of visual purpose, drilling down to an absolute purity of negative and positive in black and white, their space and relationships.

From that body of work he has evolved and come forward with an expressive use of colour, engaging a renewed understanding of the power, shifts, impacts and the physical movement involved in applying the principles and the actual application of paint. Pushing further he has embraced colour fields and taken new modern colours of fluro green and high vis red into a highly developed modern palette.

"I apply paint unconventionally with brooms, squeegees, rags and canvas boards; these amplify body gestures and actions. After days of preparation, multiple works are made during one brief painting session. Intuitive method increases the scope of possibility as things considered external to painting may be internalised into its systems. There is a movement of what painting is and what it may become," says the artist.

Hawley has been recognised in various group and solo exhibitions and is represented in numerous public collections including TMAG, Devonport, Burnie Regional Galleries and Artbank, and private collections, both here and internationally.
