Dean Smith: Erbium and Stone - Art Collector

Dean Smith, Erbium and Stone, 2015. Medium fine white stoneware, feldspathic glaze, porcelain and fused enamel, 37 x 26 x 8 cm (variable). Courtesy: the artist, & Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne

Employing crystalline glazes and precious metallic lustres, Dean Smith's ceramic work is exquisitely variable in form and pattern. Infused with the magic of happenstance in the way shapes scatter across the ceramic form, Dean’s artworks exhibit the tension between rigid geometric shapes, intense glistening beauty, and the vulnerability captured in each individual bloom of crystal.

The relationship between the worked form and the natural world is fundamental to this new body of work. Currently residing in Central Victoria, the raw post-mining landscape surrounding Dean Smith’s home and studio provides rich inspiration for his artwork. Intimate features of this terrain, including exposed bedrock and vegetation, collapsed mineshafts, and rusting metal machines are described in the careful surface markings on his ceramics.

Dean Smith has exhibited in major national and international ceramic exhibitions and has received several prestigious awards including Taiwan Ceramics Biennale (Silver Prize, 2012), 8th Cheongju International Craft Competition, South Korea (Special Citation, 2013), Clunes National Ceramic Award (Winner, 2013) and Vase Finder International 9th Annual Exhibition, USA (Winner, 2014).
