Djirrirra Wunungmurra is a prodigious talent from the Yirrkala region in Arnhem Land. Her paintings on bark and hollow logs explore her interpretation of Yukuwa, a yam whose annual reappearance is a metaphor for the increase and renewal of her people and their land. The Yukuwa has inspired a new visual universe for the artist, centred around the seasonal variations of the yam and its morphology. Djirrirra Wunungmurra was awarded the Togart Contemporary Art Award in 2008 and the Bark Painting Award at the Telstra NATSIAAs in 2012.
