The Space Between presents a visual narrative about emotional vulnerability of the human psyche. This is a major theme in McManus’ work especially in his installation for the Dark Mofo Festival in 2015. His commentary on the psyche and concepts of erasure, emotion, violence and deterioration of the human body are represented in this exhibition by moments of quiet self-reflection. This pause, to contemplate and be human is almost contrary in our world of instant connectivity. The Space Between presents an alternative view to this notion of disconnection by considering vulnerability, in a sense, as a source of strength, nobility and beauty. Using images, based on a series of photographs taken while living in Northern Tasmania, he applies layers of pre-applied acrylic paint and engraving techniques to create unique state works on linen canvas.
