Douglas Stichbury: The Light of Other Days - Art Collector

Douglas Stichbury, The Envoy, 2017, framed oil on linen, 1,200 x 940mm. Courtesy the artist and {Suite}, Wellington.

Scenes from 1970’s science fiction provide Douglas Stichbury with much of his inspiration. But absurd and speculative propositions can be difficult to interpret and actual descriptions can be sparse on details, so Stichbury uses 3D modelling to create digital renderings before painting them. He also looks for other sources to flesh out the specifics of a particular object or scene. Paintings for this show are based on books The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin.

New York based, Stichbury won the 2014 Parkin Drawing Prize.
