16 October 2013 | Formerly a curator at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Zealander Simon Rees will return home early next year to take up the position of director of the gallery.

Rees was curator of contemporary art at Govett-Brewster from 2002 until 2004, leaving the gallery for the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, Lithuania where he was a curator and magazine editor, and then head of the exhibitions department. He will commence his role as Govett-Brewster director on 10 February 2014, after completing his current role of head of programming and development at the Austrian Museum of Applied and Contemporary Arts.

The Govett-Brewster building is currently closed for maintenance work, earthquake strengthening and the construction of a new building, the Len Lye Centre. The gallery remains active through off-site projects, touring exhibitions and collaborations with other cultural organisations throughout Taranaki and New Zealand. The new combined facility is expected to open in 2015.
