Gabriella Hirst: Force Majeure - Art Collector

Gabriella Hirst, video still from Force Majeure, 2015-2016. Courtesy of the artist and Manly Art Gallery and Museum.

Artist Gabriella Hirst filmed herself attempting to paint a representational seascape whilst in the midst of terrible weather, trying to eliminate the buffer zone between the destructive force and the creative act. The attempts took place on the Island of Rügen, Germany, where romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich painted in the early 1800s. This work, originally commissioned by the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne appears in expanded form at Manly Art Gallery and Museum.
