Gemma Smith, Second, 2015. Acrylic on canvas,137 x 117cm. Courtesy: the artist and Sarah Cottier Gallery, Paddington An exhibition featuring the works of Gemma Smith. Gemma Smith’s latest series of paintings tend toward the collusion and composition of colour and gesture. Utilising the brushwork of an initial freeform ground image as a structuring grid, certain brushstrokes, which seemingly meander across the canvas, are over-painted in hard-edged opaque colours. This interplay of brushwork and delineation create subtle yet precise variations in form and translucency, giving the paintings an impression of multiple planar surfaces and tiered horizons of depth. The layered diaphanous pigments and cut-out areas trick the eye, drawing it in and away from the painting’s surface and towards the dimensionality of each colour. This will be Gemma Smith’s seventh solo exhibition at Sarah Cottier Gallery. Exhibition opens: 6-8pm Thursday 19 November 2015 Exhibition closes: 19 December 2015 Location: Sarah Cottier Gallery, 23 Roylston Street, Paddington NSW 2021 Contact: 02 9356 3305 Email: mail@sarahcottiergallery.com | ||||
