Giles Alexander’s work draws from both religion and science. While these two cornerstones are often regarded as polar opposites, Alexander prefers to treat them as flipsides of the same coin. A diverse range of art history and digital media are appropriated as he superimposes, manipulates and simulates data to find ways of reinventing the traditional and the handmade. In a fluid and dynamic body of work on floating aluminum canvases, Alexander deftly laces his paintings with diverse images drawn from human belief systems, contrasting mythical deities with their contemporary counterparts. The work Our Father is a Red Giant, shown above, explores the origins of the solar system in a compelling, pulsating close-up image of the sun.
