22 May 2013 | Gladdy Kemarre from Utopia in the Northern Territory has been announced as the winner of the 2013 Calleen Art Award for her work Anwekety (Bush Plum), pictured above.

The award is open nationally and is an acquisitive prize for painting worth $17,000. It has been running since 1977 and the winning work joins the collection of the Cowra Regional Art Gallery.

This year's judge was Anne Flanagan, deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She praised Kemarre's work as being a shimmering and mesmerising work about the artist's country and the seasonal bush plums that dominate its landscape.

The finalist's exhibition consists of the winning work and the 71 shortlisted pieces. It is on display at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery until 16 June 2013.
