Graham Brindley: Homogeny - Art Collector

Graham Brindley,The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of its Parts, 2010. Engraved welsh slate, 120 x 200 cm. Courtesy: the artist and Fehily Contemporary, Melbourne

In Homogeny, Graham Brindley links centuries of technological advancement through a series of works etched on slate grids. Symbols of tools, ranging from the human hand and the stone axe to the gun and the microchip, are formed out of continuous streams of text, harking back to our first attempts to communicate by engraving words on slate. By tying these diverse products of human enterprise together and placing them in our ancient past, Brindley suggests they aren't too dissimilar. Moreoever, through their textual basis and heavy symbolism, Brindley presents them all as attempts at a singular goal: communication.
