Today, the promise of happiness has become the event horizon of our physical and emotional perfection. Eternal bliss beckons, but only once we’ve conquered dolphin pose, calorie counting, and the transformation of our inner worlds. Psychologists, life coaches, nutritionists, mindfulness experts, and personal trainers ask us to look within for the answers; our external irritations and angsts are beyond our control. Lucky we can master how we eat, think, talk, sleep, and work out. In this regime, time is the most precious resource, sliced so finely that every micro-break is an opportunity to optimise our potential selves.

Grant Stevens’ new exhibition, What you seek is seeking you, offers refuge from the cultural conditions of the attention economy. Featuring new video and photographic works, the exhibition continues Stevens’ ongoing interests in the possibilities for self-reflection and contemplation in an era defined by time deficits and information overloads. Through their repetitions, loops, and patterns, these works invite us to slow down and mentally declutter. Sitting somewhere between an abyss of nothingness, and the unveiling of a Zen paradise, they question what solace can be found beyond today’s 24/7 KPIs and PBs.
