18 December 2012 | Sydney photographer Greg Weight has won the people’s choice in the 2012 Blake Prize.

He was selected by visitors to the exhibition for an image of a church in an isolated area titled
Sign of the Cross.

There are seven references to the cross in the image, including the telegraph pole.

“The sign of the cross or crossing oneself is a ritual hand motion tracing the shape of the cross in the air or on one’s own body and is made by many branches of Christianity. The tyre tracks left imprinted into the wet dirt road, remind me of that physical gesture,” says the artist.

He wins a cash prize of $1,000.
