Various anonymous artists from Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands, PNG), Untitled (The Phantom shields), c.1970–1980s. Wood, natural fibres, ochre, charcoal, steel, enamel paint, dimensions variable. Courtesy of the artists and Andrew Baker Art Dealer, Brisbane.

Covering the period 1968 to 2017, the earliest work in the exhibition is a screenprint by Mathias, a semi-anonymous inmate of Port Moresby’s Laloki Psychiatric Hospital. A highlight of this exhibition are a group of five ‘Phantom’ shields created in the 1970s and 1980s by anonymous artists from the remote Wahgi Valley in Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands Province. Featuring strongly in this exhibition are works by Mathias Kauage O.B.E. (c.1944–2003) and members of the ‘Kauage school of painters’, including members of the artist’s immediate family.
