Group exhibition: Creativity of Meenas - Art Collector

Meena paintings. Courtesy: Madan Meena and Artisan, Brisbane

This exhibition celebrates the dying craft of Mandana painting by women of the Meena tribe of Rajasthan, India. These monochromatic paintings were traditionally painted directly onto the walls or floors of homes with chalk or ochre and depict richly intricate designs of animals, deities and other motifs to protect the home, welcome the gods or celebrate festive occasions. This exhibition, in which the designs have been re-created by today’s Meena women using white pigments on brown paper, offers a unique insight into the ancient art of Mandana. The exhibition is curated by Dr Madan Meena.
