Helen Pynor: Fallen - Art Collector

Helen Pynor, Fallen 6, 2017, framed archival pigment print, 80 x 120 cm. Courtesy the artist and Dominik Mersch Gallery

Fallen is comprised of four photographic series that explore the ambiguous transition from life into death, the fragile origins of life, the transformation of animal-subject into meat-object, and our complex relationships with the animals we consume for food.
The prompt for this exhibition was Pynor’s 2016 installation
The End is a Distant Memory, developed during a 5-month residency at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany. Here Pynor used tissue culture techniques to successfully extract and culture living chicken cells obtained from chicken meat she bought at a supermarket. She then maintained the cells in culture for 3 months.
