Ian Parry: Another World - Art Collector

Ian Parry, After Vlamingh 1 2016 Oil on linen 92 x 137cm Courtesy of the artist and Colville Gallery, Hobart.

These new works by Ian Parry explode with colour and sensuous working and reworking of the paint as navigational charts with plotted course lines that pull the viewer across spaces, while barricades of abstracted rock, shore line and shoals emphasize the safety of the charted course.

Two major works reference the Dutch cartographer Willem de Vlamingh (1640-1698) whose 1697 voyage to the west coast of the Southland (Western Australia) plotted valuable and detailed mapping of latitudes 20 - 32 degress South. The courage, daring and perseverance of these sailors underlie the same creative endeavours of the artist who similarly takes us on painterly voyage, partly to define the unknown and chart what has not been charted before.

Other works allow a semblance of horizon line while acknowledging the dominance and boldness of light in his maritime narratives. Leading us further are abstracted landscape works with structural forms and shapes that dance and push our perspective and perception with colour blocks.

Ian Parry is an established artist with a distinguished exhibiting career since the 1970’s and has represented works in major public collections around Australia as well as Australian and International Private collections.
