Imants Tillers: In Normal Times - Art Collector

Imants Tillers, Burning Land, 2016. Synthetic polymer paint, gouache on 54 canvas boards, no.99460 - 99513, 228.6 x 213.4cm. Courtesy The Artist and Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney.

In Normal Times is a prelude to the most crucial exhibition of Imants Tillers’ artistic career - a retrospective at the Latvian National Museum of Art, Riga in 2018. The exhibition is a tribute and testament to his parents who arrived in Australia as ‘displaced persons’ in 1949. Tillers’ exhibition and oeuvre meditate on the themes of “belonging” and “not belonging” – about relationships between a “fatherland” and its diaspora. In many ways this is almost the universal leitmotif of the 20th century. Much of the contemporary world, or what is called “the new world” is populated by the descendants of refugees and immigrants, most notably Australia.
