Israel Birch - Āria: Way of the light - Art Collector

Israel Birch’s new exhibition, Āria: Way of the light, uses concepts of Māori cosmology. Āria is a Māori word meaning likeness or resemblance and also a physical representation of an atua, or spirit. Birch’s unique lacquer and steel paintings are made by grinding and etching patterns into a stainless steel base. The works function on a whakairo – Maori carving design – principle of an anti-cyclic system where one movement is countered by another, giving the appearance of two planes shifting simultaneously. The etched patterns sit beneath layers of coloured lacquer, creating ripple effects that flicker across the surface.
