Jack Rowland: Unfamiliar - Art Collector

Jack Rowland, Blue Gum, 2011. Oil on linen, 198 x 122cm. Courtesy: the artist and Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne

The well-trodden landscape around Castlemaine is reborn in the vivid, psychedelic canvases of Melbourne artist, Jack Rowland. His works explore the notion of altered perception with an intense palette of hyper-real and oversaturated colours combined with a realist style of technical painting. The genre of landscape is embedded in the history of art; yet, in the contemporary art climate, it is often considered to be exhausted or even mundane. Through his paintings, Rowland breaks the traditional ties attached to the genre of landscape painting and re-instates its position in contemporary art.
